Family visas

couple

Spouses or unmarried Partners

Applicants must demonstrate with evidence that they meet a number of requirements. Previously, a couple needed to have lived together for at least two years to be recognised as unmarried partners, however, this is no longer strictly required. As long as the couple can demonstrate an ongoing commitment similar to that of a marriage or civil partnership, they may still qualify, even if they have not lived together or are not currently living together.

fiance-2

Fiancé or proposed civil partner

This type of application can only be made from outside the UK for the purpose of gettingmarried or entering civil partnership with your partner who is present and settled in the UK within six months of your arrival in the UK. Once married, applicants can apply again under Appendix FM for 30 months’ leave to remain as a partner. This second application can be made from within the UK.

parent-child

Parent of a child in the UK

If you have parental responsibility for a child in the UK, you may be eligible to make an application to enter or remain in the UK on this basis. The child must be living in the UK already and be either a British or Irish citizen, settled or pre-settled status in the UK. The Parent of a Child Visa can lead to indefinite leave to remain or settlement in the UK after a period of 5 years.

child-dependant-2

Child dependant

A child dependent visa allows a child residing abroad to join a parent living in the UK, provided the parent can show either sole responsibility for the child or that there are serious and compelling family reasons making the child’s exclusion undesirable. The exact requirements your child will need to satisfy may vary depending on your child’s personal circumstances.

relative

Adult dependant relative

This immigration route allows for an adult Sponsor to bring an adult relative to the UK. The adult dependant has to demonstrate that they require long term personal care and that it is either unavailable or unaffordable in their country of origin.

ancestry

UK Ancestry

If you are a citizen of a Commonwealth country and one of your grandparents was born in the UK, you may qualify for this visa, which permits you to live, work, and study in the UK, and also to bring family members with you. After residing in the UK for five years on this visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and, following 12 months with ILR, you may then apply for British citizenship.
