Student visa

If you are 16 or over and want to study a course at a higher education level in the UK lasting longer than six months, you will most likely need to apply for a student visa. You will need to have an unconditional offer from a licensed sponsor to be eligible for the visa.

Those who graduate from an approved course in the UK will be able to remain in the country under the Graduate Visa route for up to two years to live, work and look for work. PhD graduates will be able to do so for up to three years.

Student Dependants visa

You can bring your husband, wife, unmarried partner, and children (under 18) to the UK with you as a Student dependant if one of the following applies to you:
• You are studying for a PhD, other doctoral qualification, or a research-based higher degree course of 9 months or more
• You are a government-sponsored student and studying a course at any level of 6 months or more
Your dependants can apply to enter the UK at the same time as you or they can apply separately at a later date. If they do not apply at the same time as you they should ensure that you have received your visa before they make an application themselves.

If your dependents wish to visit for up to six months only, they may wish to come as visitors. Please note, however, that it is not possible to switch from a visitor visa into a Points Based System dependant visa or any other visa from within the UK.
