UK Ancestry visa – are you eligible?

sx-admin

The UK Ancestry visa is a great opportunity for eligible Commonwealth nationals to live and work in the UK. Below are the basic eligibility criteria:

  • Be a Commonwealth national;
  • Be at least 17 years old;
  • Have at least one grandparent born in the UK, the Islands, Ireland (before 31 March 1922). You will need to provide birth certificates for yourself, your parent, and the grandparent born in the UK or relevant territories;
  • Intend to work in the UK. Unlike other visa routes, the Ancestry visa does not require a job offer at the time of application, however, you must demonstrate a genuine intention to seek employment, whether as an employee, self-employed, or in a voluntary role; and
  • Be able to support and accommodate yourself and any dependants in the UK without relying on public funds. This requires proof of sufficient financial resources, for example three months of bank statements.

After five years in the UK on an Ancestry visa, you may be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), allowing you to settle permanently in the UK.
